Diagnosing Lymphedema
Diagnosing lymphedema is usually done using two methods. The first is a visual exam with the doctor which includes checking for swelling of a single leg, or in some cases arm, asking if the patient is experiencing heaviness in the leg and decreased range of motion or ability to move the leg and lastly the doctor will look to see if the over the swollen area has hardened or infected (cellulitis).
The doctor may also perform a "lymphoscintigraphy", which is used to show if there is a problem in the lymphatic system.
