Durston Gear X-Mid Fly Rain Pitch
Sharing how we pitch the Durston X-Mid fly in the rain.
We keep the fly in the top of our pack or on the outside to make it faster to reach. We also keep our stakes on the outside.
We added (yellow) cord loops to the inside corners of the fly, and shockcord and shockcord hooks to the groundsheet to make connecting them together easier. All this allows us to set up the fly quickly and get out of the rain so we can do everything else. Shockcord allows the groundsheet to "self-adjust" on uneven ground.
We used our Pro 2 tarp (scissor mod), but it works the same with the detachable SilPoly X-Mid 1 or 2 flys.
We think this fly first pitch is great for getting out of the rain fast and keeping everything else dry. We can get under the fly while only getting our tarp and stakes wet, then dry off with a towel and start setting everything else up. Works great with a wet dog too!
Now that Dan Durston sells the X-Mid 1 and 2 flys separate from the entire shelter, anyone can order a fly and groundsheet and do the same setup.
