I had a chance to sit down and chat with Prof. David Kipping (Columbia University) recently, whose astronomy research "Cool Worlds" channel on YouTube passed 100k subscribers in 2019! We talk YouTube, monetization, outreach online, SETI and the search for technosignatures, and the effort to capture and document the lives of scientists and the joy of discovery.
Some Highlights:
0:58 On the origin and changing style of "Cool Worlds"
3:45 Where is David's YouTube Silver Play button?!
4:40 Monetization and Academia
5:38 Cool Worlds merch? Podcast?!
6:46 Should we be doing more astro outreach online?
11:22 On SETI and the opportunity for young researchers!
It was a great opportunity to hang out with David again, and I really appreciate all his insights. I really hope you enjoy this behind the scenes look at how an active scientist runs a successful YouTube channel!
Go subscribe to Cool Worlds!!!
