YouTube is major social networking platform. Your subscribers are the people who are interested in your content and every time you upload a new content, YouTube sends notification to your subscribers which will in turn increase your viewership.
More subscribers will also help increas your rankings on youtube. The more people are interested in your video content the more they will subscribe. And eventually you will have a following. The process is slow at the beginning but once your name gets out there eventually they will come. Just be consistant. Don't give up. I started with 0 subscribers. Then 1 then 3 then 7. Then it starts to take off. The more views you get the better. Try subscribe to a video you watch it's good ethics especially when you have watched the video all the way to the end. If you subscribe it means you like this type of content which in turn will allow the youtube channel owner the feedback they need to build more videos like the one you liked. Speeking of which liking videos are just as important as subscribing. It's a good jesture to like a video and subscribe. You only have to subscribe once.
