There are a couple of tracks that get re-used between the Sonic karting games - so let's do a two way split-screen comparison
between one of the returning tracks in Team Sonic from Sonic & All-Stars Racing, Whale Lagoon and see how this particular stage has evolved across the 2 games.
All Star Racing is actually a 7th generation console title, I've got it on the Xbox 360 ( • Sonic and Sega All Star Racing - Whale Lag... ), but I thought it'd be interesting here to use the arcade version of it (running in Teknoparrot). This was an unusal arcade title in that it actually started off as a home console game and was ported to the arcade after elease at home (I believe this arcade version was a more or less straight port of the PC version of the game, with a few UI changes in fitting with its change to the arcades). Unlike the PC version of Transformed, which has significantly better visuals than its home console relatives, the PC/Arcade version of All Star doesn't, as far as I'm aware, offer any graphical advantage over the console versions. Team Sonic Racing was an 8th generation console game and is running on my PS4, unlike its older console brothers, Team Sonic is running at
60fps.
The music on Whale Lagoon in the arcade version of the game switches between several different tunes, seemingly randomly, and I really wanted to use a run on the game with "Can You Feel The Sunshine" from Sonic R playing in the background. But, Christ-on-a-bike, trying to consistently get a 1st place on the track feels ENTIRELY like some RNG game, dependent on just how much the CPU players decide they're going to hammer you with every. Single. Weapon in their arsenal, some of which are things that flip the screen and reverse your controls and will 100% screw your game up on the final lap when you've been out in first for awhile - which is what kept happening every single time I had the background music I actually wanted playing. FFS... Much as I loved Sonic Transformed, the CPU players could be pretty chuffin' annoying in that too and it certainly feels like this is balanced out in a better way in Team Sonic.
