When we read our diaries from many years back, we might get a shock to find the person writing them seems a world away from who you are now.
That's what is behind this song.
Lyrics:
I found a box of my old diaries
From the time I lived in Liverpool
I barely recognise the writer
Half the time he seems such a tool
So many incidents I’d forgotten
So many names to which I can’t put a face
My memory, it seems is rotten
Or the past was in truth another place

There’s reviews of shows I had been to
That I can’t remember at all
That guy I was needed to be seen to
He was such a weird oddball
Obsessed with sex and beauty
An embarrassing would be Don Juan
Intellectually snooty
It was a scandal how he carried on

Was that me who wrote those pages?
It doesn’t seem possible somehow
I’ve gone through so many changes
I barely remember him now

There are people that he mentions
Who regularly came to his place
He talks of their discussions
And comes across as a right nutcase
Time after time he mentions names
That don’t ring the slightest bell
I feel I’m playing some memory games
Devised by some demon from hell

CHORUS

Three Chord Trick in "C"
