Photoshop Exercise 1: John Stezaker's Landscape/Portrait Collage
A part of John Stezaker art practice is to make landscape/portrait collages. He layers photographs of landscapes on top of portraits. This creates odd and grotesque images reminiscent of dreams and the Surrealist Art of the 1930s.
The aim of this demonstration is to create 3 variations of a landscape/portrait collage in the style of John Stezaker.
I’ve chosen Brad Pitt and a pit as the portrait and landscape respectively.
So firstly, on Google I find a decent portrait of Brad Pitt. In search tools I set image size to ‘large’ to get high quality images. I drag it onto the desktop. Then I find a decent landscape of a pit.
I open Photoshop and File Open both images. I use the select tool to select the whole pit. I edit cut the image and click on Brad’s tab. I then edit paste the image on top of Brad. The image is too large so I go to edit ‘free transform’. Now, by clicking and dragging the corner I can shrink the image to an appropriate size and drag in the middle to move it around. Once I am happy with the position of the pit I File save as, give the picture a title and choose JPEG in the Format drop down menu. Ok.
I want a second variation so I free transform and this time drag beyond the images corner to rotate the image, then shrink and reposition. I then give the image a different title and save it as a second JPEG.
I free transform and manipulate the image again and save my 3rd variation.
You can do your own landscape/portraits using other images. Here are 3 versions of Cave and Nick Cave and stone and matt stone.
