In Canada, the new nutrition facts label regulation does not require added sugars as in the USA under CFR 21 101.9. CFIA only requires ingredients grouping for sugars within the ingredient declaration, and expression of total sugars and %DV in the NFT. There are reasons from a manufacturing perspective why total added sugars can be a difficult labelling strategy, especially in food products where addition of sugar is to compensate for low Brix values in the product based on variability in the quality of input ingredients. Consumers should pay attention to the total sugars content, as that is the major concern for nutrition quality.
