In March 2020, I landed in Indonesia with the expectation of only being in the country for a few weeks. Because of the pandemic, I ended up spending five months across the archipelago documenting my adventures with friends while exploring the limits of risk and uncertainty. Being stuck here was a lottery ticket in it's own right and I wanted to make a film that does a bit of justice to what we experienced. I spent hours every day filming in the water sometimes putting myself in situations where I really didn't feel comfortable. These experiences ultimately allowed me to feel the pulse of the ocean, the powerful energy it gives out, and I gained a new respect for Mother Nature.
None of this would have been possible without the incredible hospitality of locals who took care of us. Although they were going through a hard time themselves, trying to support their families, they also took risks by hosting us. They weren’t 100% sure where we’d been or who we’d been in contact with. But they continued to care for us when we had nowhere else to go.
When my parents suggested I leave the country to find a place with better medical care, I sternly refused. I knew that if I stayed & waited out the pandemic, I would have a once in a lifetime opportunity to surf the most uncrowded waves in 30 years. A dream was born and I'm so happy I will have this film to look back on many years down the road. Thankful for the journey of a lifetime.
