Hi,
In this video I show how some simple cheap components and a cardboard box can improve the bass on a modern 4k Samsung TV.
I show a Toshiba Link / TOSLINK decoder with S/PDIF too, Amazon £9.99
A £10 amp kit from ebay.
An old car speaker and a cardboard box.

If you want a DAC for hifi use, you need to know information about the digital data you want to decode.
For example – This £9.99 decoder will not decode PCM with TDS (Digital Theatre Sound) it is purely PCM which in its most basic form is 2 channel stereo totally uncompressed.
The TOSLink is purely an optical version of the common coaxial Sony / Philips Digital Interface.
DTS, Digital Theatre Sound is compressed and carries 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound.
5.1 is
2 front speakers left & right
1 centre (voice)
2 rear speakers left & right
1 subwoofer
7.1 has 2 side speakers left & right
One main advantage of a Toslink is it reduces the possibility of ground loops which can cause mains hum.

My 4k Samsung TV only has HDMI or TOSLINK for audio.
