They were the unsung heroes of the wars – the animals that carried soldiers and their provisions, served as their mascots, provided friendship and warmth, and even warned against enemy attack. They faced danger, hardship and adversity alongside the soldiers and their presence was invaluable. The poppy banners in Napier and Taradale libraries feature an acknowledgement of the service of these devoted and gallant animals.
