EWI Practice
Practising (half of) the solo from Bigger than Bonnie and Clyde on my EWI 4000S. I can't play it at its original tempo - turns out even for an atrocious keyboard player like myself, turns, grace notes, runs, etc. are still easier to play at speed on a keyboard than with woodwind fingering! A couple of mistakes here and there, but by this point I'd been playing the passage for a probably over an hour straight, and my fingers were starting to feel funny - definitely need to look up some sort of finger exercises. This was the closest I got to a decent run with the camera on, managed to hit both the octave pitch bends at least. Overall, I reckon it's not too bad given that I haven't played my oboe in well over a decade at this point, and have had the EWI for about two days!
(The EWI has a series of "octave rollers", instead of traditional woodwind-style octave keys & special fingerings, so you can play a full 8 octaves, plus a "glide plate" that if pressed whilst changing octave, performs a full octave portamento.)
Using one of the built-in sounds here, but this thing also outputs MIDI, including breath-controlled aftertouch. Because the mouthpiece is literally an oblong rubbery tube, you don't have to worry about any sort of embouchure/reed technique, and can dedicate all your attention to dynamics/expression - expect some "real" unsequenced solos & expressive instrumental passages in the next album! I'd love to try it as a controller for something like the Audiomodeling SWAM Saxophones or Aaron Venture Infinite Brass, but those cost even more money I don't have going spare right now.
I bought this second-hand, supposedly with the Patchman soundbank pre-installed, but either it's been fiddled with since or wasn't installed properly, because the sounds I have don't seem to match the descriptions, and the first three or four patches all sound suspiciously identical, so going to re-install that myself at some point.
The second half of the solo devolves into runs of chords only really intended to be played back from a sequencer, not performed, so I didn't even try ;)
