In this video, I want to share the history of cyberattacks, and we'll begin by introducing the Chernobyl computer virus, which physically destroys systems.
CIH, or "Chernobyl" (Virus.Win9x.CIH), is a computer virus written by Taiwanese student Chen Yinghao in June 1998. It is a memory-resident virus that runs only on Windows 95/98/ME.
On April 26, 1999, the anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, the virus was activated and destroyed data on the hard drives of infected computers. On some computers, the BIOS chips were corrupted. The coincidence of the virus's activation date and the date of the Chernobyl disaster gave the virus its second name—"Chernobyl," which is even better known to the public than "CIH."
According to various estimates, the virus affected approximately half a million personal computers worldwide.
According to The Register, on September 20, 2000, Taiwanese authorities arrested the creator of the infamous computer virus.
The first working virus was discovered in June 1998 in Taiwan—the virus's author infected computers at his university. Over the following week, virus outbreaks were reported in Austria, Australia, Israel, and the United Kingdom. Traces of the virus were later found in several other countries, including Russia. The infection of several American web servers distributing computer games triggered the pandemic that began on April 26, 1999. A "logic bomb" detonated on half a million computers, destroying information on hard drives and corrupting data on BIOS chips.
When an infected file is launched, the virus installs its code into Windows memory, intercepting the execution of EXE files and writing a copy of itself to them. Depending on the current date, the virus can damage data on the computer's Flash BIOS and hard drives.
