Full yogic breathing is a yoga technique that allows the use of all parts of the lungs, meeting the body's oxygen needs and eliminating excess carbon dioxide. Full breathing is natural for everyone; children breathe this way. However, over time, due to poor posture, weak muscle tone, and a number of other factors, partial breathing becomes the norm instead of full breathing—when the pulmonary system is functioning improperly, in a distorted manner.

Partial breathing occurs in three forms.

One type is when a person breathes primarily through the chest (the ribs move, while the abdomen remains virtually motionless); another is when the ribs and abdomen barely move, and "clavicular" breathing occurs—only at the level of the upper lungs. The third type is so-called abdominal (or "lower") breathing, when the abdomen expands during inhalation and slightly contracts during exhalation, but the intercostal muscles are weakly engaged. As a result, the body suffers from a lack of oxygen and poor pulmonary ventilation, as carbon dioxide stagnates in certain parts of the respiratory system.

The practice of full yogic breathing helps eliminate the shortcomings of habitual partial breathing. It increases blood and lymph flow throughout the body, ensuring the proper functioning of all body systems.

During full breathing, the diaphragm (the muscular partition separating the chest and abdominal cavities) moves up and down, massaging the intestines, liver, and other internal organs.
