My BMW's handbrake is no longer effective even though the brake discs and brake shoes are recent. I therefore adjust the handbrake according to the technical manual.
I do this on a BMW 5 series E39 but the method is similar for the following models:
BMW 1 series E81, E87
BMW 3 series E46, E90, E91, E92, E93
BMW 5 series E60
BMW 7 series E38
BMW Z3

The adjustment is made first inside the disc with an adjustment screw for the shoes. Then the adjustment is made by acting on the tension of the two cables.
