Diagnostic VANOS BMW : When the Data Trouble Codes (DTC) mislead you ! Mechanical jamming
I have 2 error codes on my BMW 5 series E39 528i: D4 VANOS Mechanical jamming and 41 Camshaft sensor.
By replacing the camshaft position sensor, the Camshaft sensor trouble code disappears but not the VANOS Mechanical jamming fault.
I briefly explain how the VANOS system works.
Then I discover that the solenoid is blown in short circuit and I assume that this is the cause of the engine fault.
So I replaced the solenoid with a new one. I test the new solenoid before mounting it on the car.
However, the VANOS Mechanical jamming trouble code does not disappear.
So I think the solenoid short circuit fried something else.
I'm testing the harness between the ECU and the solenoid.
Then I test the solenoid signal in the ECU.
And I finally deduce that the problem does not come from the ECU.
By replacing the camshaft position sensor again with a part from another brand,
the problem disappears: the variation of the values read of the pitch angle is lower.
