Skeeter Davis, originally Mary Frances Penick, was an American singer and songwriter known for her country and pop music, notably the 1962 hit "The End of the World". starting her career as a pert of the Davis Sisters in the late 1940's, she later pursued a solo career with RCA Victor. By the late 1950's, she had become a solo star, becoming one of the earliest women to achieve significant fame in country music as a solo artist. Davis' influence extended to fellow artists like Tammy Wynette and Dolly Parton, and her unique blend of country and pop earned her praise from music critic Robert Plamer of The New York Times, who described her as exceptional country/pop vocalist.
