This lecture is part 1 of 3 lectures introducing the method of finite differences as an approach of dealing with optimization of integral functionals.
In this lecture, I introduce the Brachistochrone problem and explain how to set it up as a variational problem using methods typically encountered in an introductory calculus course. We will focus on solving this problem via the method of finite differences introduced by Euler.
