This lecture begins discussing the mathematical preliminaries required to understand the theory of the first variation (a.k.a. ''first derivative'') of a functional by introducing many common vector spaces (linear spaces) used in mathematics and focuses on specific spaces used to study problems in the calculus of variations.
These vector spaces are infinite dimensional and are in-fact spaces of functions commonly encountered in a first calculus and/or analysis course.
