Testing palette changes by painting a bison calf! Watercolour palette 2024/25
Let's take a look at one of my oldest watercolour palettes, and see how I can change it to fit my current painting needs. I'll be using paint swatches and a test painting sketch to choose which pigments to switch out, and if I need to make any changes after that (spoilers, I do!) This palette needs to be able to handle the subjects I love to paint, such as animals, characters, and fantastical creatures. This first test painting of a bison calf tackles the first, and helps me figure out strengths and weaknesses of the pigments I've chosen. I say buffalo instead of bison a few times in the video due to a fluffy brain!
Watercolour palettes can be an ever evolving thing in an art practice. As your tastes and experience changes, so too will your needs when it comes to pigments. Pigments can also change and go out of production as well. I've noticed that there is a level of need to balance consistency yet also adaptability when it comes to the materials I use for that reason.

I go by Daena online, and I'm an illustrator based in the UK. I illustrate animals, characters, and fantasy creatures in a mixture of mediums from traditional to digital. My traditional love is inked lines and watercolours for finished pieces, and my sketchbooking practice is mostly traditional media.
