This is "Event Horizon", my solo for trombone with 4 percussion, piano, and set electronics. This piece was written for trombonist Omar Elmusa at Western Michigan University. Event Horizon was premiered at the Second Composers concert of the year At Western Michigan University in the recital hall on 12/3/15. This was recorded on a phone, so it is very mushy and less balanced. The professional recording of the concert will be out soon!
Event Horizon: A theoretical boundary around a black hole beyond which no light or other radiation can escape.
This piece is in 2 very distinct seconds. A slow section led by the electronics, and a fast section led by percussion. The electronics in the first section demonstrate how grand and massive space is, while simultaneously showing how empty and lonely it can be. This beauty of space (shown the the electronics) begins to fade away in comparison to the percussion as the tempo increases and the performers take over. Eventually the "beauty" ends as the percussion take full control, which takes us to the second section. The heavy percussion in this section are meant to demonstrate the power, forcefulness, and chaotic nature that is a black hole and its gravity. The piece continues to build till the very end as we approach the event horizon of a black hole. Right as we are about to cross the event horizon, the time starts to bend in the last few measures.
