Puzzles! In modern society, perhaps, it is impossible to find a person who, at least once in his life, did not collect these colored pictures, or at least did not hear about such entertainment. But the question arises: how did it occur to a person to cut the sheet with the image into small pieces in order to reassemble the same picture?

The inventor of puzzles is considered to be a member of the Royal Geographical Society - John Spielsbury. In about 1760 in London, in order to diversify the lessons of geography for his students, he sawed a black and white paper geographic map, pre-pasted on a wooden base, along the border lines. Later, John Spielsbury received a patent for his invention and opened a trade in wooden puzzles, he called the store "Cartographers and cutters of maps on wood." His wooden maps, cut into fragments, are becoming the new geography textbook. A little later, cardboard stamping became widespread in America. This made it possible to make puzzles accessible not only to the wealthiest segments of the population. The growth in popularity in many countries around the world has become truly epic. The appearance of color images only accelerated it even more.
The American company Parker Brothers played an important role in the development of cardboard puzzles. In 1908 they released the Leisure collection, which became very popular thanks to the introduction of some innovations. Firstly, Parker Brothers came up with curly details that fit together much better, and secondly, they offered to collect art reproductions.

In the Soviet Union, puzzles were not produced. Moreover, it is interesting to know that they were in pre-revolutionary Russia. At that time they were called in the German manner "puzel". Pouselles consisted of no more than 100 pieces and were very fashionable salon entertainment among the upper class. Mikhail Nabokov wrote about this in his novel "The Defense of Luzhin".
In the 50s of the twentieth century, the passion for puzzles flared up with renewed vigor thanks largely to the German company Ravensburger. It was she who began to offer puzzle lovers large puzzles with the number of parts from 1000 to 5000, which can take from several days to six months to collect.

Currently, there are a large number of different types and modifications of puzzles. Puzzles are divided according to the size of the elements and the size of a single picture. The classic number of elements in a small puzzle is 54 (puzzles up to about 260 elements are considered for children).
Puzzles with more than 260 pieces are aimed more at an adult audience. In addition to the classic ones, there are three-dimensional (3D-puzzles), "soft" (intended for children) and computer puzzles.
