What is a Gastric Bypass?
Dr. Terry Scarborough at Texas Laparoscopic Consultants provides a brief explanation of the Gastric Bypass or also known as Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. We will be discussing the types of patients that are well suited for the gastric bypass.
Here at Texas Laparoscopic Consultants our doctors are experts and trained in laparoscopic weight loss surgery. For the gastric bypass, there will be about 5 small incisions placed around the abdomen. During surgery, the surgeon will create a small pouch from the stomach. This new small pouch will be attached directly to the small intestine. This re-routing, or bypass, will allow swallowed food to go directly into the small intestine. Patients who are suited for the bypass typically struggle with severe acid reflux, or GERD, and Diabetes Mellitus. Usually patients lose up to 60-70% of excess weight from the gastric bypass.
