Houston’s own weight loss surgeon, Dr. Sherman Yu of Texas Laparoscopic Consultants, explains the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery. The sleeve gastrectomy is also known as gastric sleeve or VSG. During weight loss surgery, the outer crescent of the stomach is removed. The new stomach left behind is a smaller stomach shaped like a banana. The gastric sleeve surgery is a metabolic surgery, meaning that it limits the amount of food the new stomach can hold but also the part of the stomach that is removed contains the hunger hormone called Ghrelin. Unlike the gastric bypass, the pathway in which food travels through the digestive system does not change with the gastric sleeve. Typically patients lose up to 65% of their body weight and experience other health benefits.
