This is an unboxing, test, and review of my new RODE NTG-3 shotgun microphone. I recently purchased the RODE NTG-3 kit which includes the Rode NTG-3 microphone, Rode boom pole, Rode blimp, rode shock mount, 30ft 3 pin XLR cable and a few other minor accessories including my Zoom H4n
I bought the RODE NTG 3 here.

Ive only used the mic on one project so far and on a few tests so I havent yet been able to make a full evaluation on the pros and cons of the mic. The main con i've noticed wit hthe kit itself is the blimps high frequencies. When the mic is in the blimp, it soudns a little like it's in a blimp. There is a slight reverb/ echoey soud that comes into the mic when recording outdoors.
The build quality is great and comes with a ten year warrant when registered on their site! That shows how much faith RODE has in their products! The RØDE NTG3 super-cardioid shotgun microphone is designed for professional use on films, commercials, ect. The pickup pattern is narrow but yet still wide enough to capture noise in all directions, faintly. The next mic up from this one would be, in my opinion, the Sennheiser MKH-416. The pick up pattern is narrower with an overall better sound to it.

(From the RODE website)
The RØDE NTG3 super-cardioid shotgun microphone is designed for professional use on film, television, electronic news gathering and wherever high-resolution broadcast audio is required.

As RØDE's premier directional microphone the NTG3 exhibits superlative audio quality with a rich, warm quality and a full frequency response. Its RF bias technology makes it almost completely resistant to moisture, making it the only option when recording in demanding environments where condensation is an issue.

Machined from solid brass and available in either anti-glare, nickel-plated finish or matte black (NTG3B), the NTG3 is incredibly robust while remaining light weight.

Its precise yet forgiving polar pattern ensures that whether used on-camera or on a boom pole, the NTG3 will capture audio clearly every time.

A durable aluminum storage cylinder is supplied to provide the ultimate protection for the NTG3 while in storage and transport. Tightly sealed at both ends the cylinder is highly weatherproof, adding to the microphone's rugged performance credentials.

The RØDE NTG3 shotgun microphone is designed and made in Australia, and covered by RØDE Microphones' industry leading 10 year warranty.
