Latin America: A New Upsurge
Amid the unprecedented recent wave of protests that has swept the world, nowhere has experienced more widespread turmoil than the South American sub-continent. Recent months have witnessed a general strike and uprising in Colombia; demonstrations throughout Chile and Brazil including well over a million in Santiago and a million in Sao Paolo; in Bolivia the return to power of the Movement For Socialism; while in Peru a socialist candidate has won a knife-edge majority over the daughter of the jailed dictator Fujimori.
From the collapse of the brutal military dictatorships in the 1990s, to the election of left reformist governments, to their subsequent downfall, these countries have largely moved in step. Now more than ever before, the entire region is once again united in a new upsurge of mass protest. What are the prospects for their struggle?
