ISRAEL’S WAR ON PALESTINE
As Israel continues its ferocious bombardment of Gaza, the last few days have witnessed massive solidarity demonstrations worldwide in support of the Palestinian people.
These protests are reminiscent of the international campaign against South African apartheid in the past.
Our speaker, Ronnie Kasrils, was a popular minister in South Africa’s first post-apartheid government and formerly a leading member of both the African National Congress and the South African Communist Party. He became a bitter critic of former president Jacob Zuma and has denounced South Africa’s "descent into police state depravity". He is now a political ally of the left-wing National Union of Metalworkers.
As a Jewish campaigner against the Israeli state, he has faced fierce criticism from South Africa’s Jewish Board of Deputies for pioneering the widespread comparison of Israel’s treatment of its Arab population with apartheid-era South Africa.
