Get ready for a practical demonstration of Franklin's Bells, an early form of an electrostatic motor! In this educational video, Professor Michael Melloch from Purdue University's Electrical and Computer Engineering department demonstrates how Franklin's Bells operate. Utilizing a high DC voltage source, specifically a Vandergraft generator, the setting is prepared with two cow bells; the right one connected to the generator, and the left one grounded. A liberty bell is then suspended between the grounded and the electrically charged cow bells. The principle of attraction and repulsion of electric charges allows the liberty bell to oscillate between the positively and negatively charged cow bells, thereby demonstrating the continual flow of electrons in this fascinating system.
