Located in the heart of Southeast Sulawesi, Buton wasn't a great kingdom with gold mines or a mighty army. Yet, for centuries, it survived pressure from the Portuguese and the Dutch East India Company (VOC) through clever diplomacy, a unique government system, and local wisdom.
