The story of Thomas Morton, the Pagan Pilgrim, who was almost written out of American history, gives us a glimpse of the split in the American psyche that was present then and now.

“I have found the Massachusetts Indian more full of humanity than the Christians…” Thomas Morton

Thomas Morton was the first man banned in Boston. He was the first American foreclosed on by a company. He was the first American to publish a fart joke, and the first American to publish a dick joke. He was also the first American accused of being a traitor. He’s the first bad neighbor throwing a wild party in recorded American history. But he also exemplified an openness to diversity and a curiosity about instead of a fear of other cultures. We may have been celebrating May Day instead of Thanksgviing if the Pilgrims hadn't put Tom Morton out of business.
