Can The CPU Temperature Readings Be Wrong (Or Inaccurate)?

We all rely on CPU temperature readings to monitor our temps... and to also feel smug about our cooling setup! But I recently saw some asking whether the all important CPU temperature reading can ever be wrong, and I was going to say NO, but after thinking about it some more, they can sometimes be inaccurate - or at least, confusing.

This is despite the fact that the sensors come from the CPU itself, so in theory they shouldn't really be 'wrong'. But in practise, there's a few points on confusion to the reported CPU temperature values.

I discuss all that (and more) in this video.
