In March 2020, Nashville, Tennessee was rocked by a chilling crime that unraveled like a plot from a crime thriller. Holly Williams, 33, and William Lanway, 36, were found dead in what first appeared to be a tragic car accident. However, it soon emerged they had been murdered, leading to an investigation that uncovered a complex web of relationships, extortion, and a murder-for-hire plot involving several individuals, including a Texas car dealer, former Israeli special forces, and ex-Marines.
Holly Williams and William Lanway had a complicated on-and-off relationship. Holly, who was open about her work as an escort, struggled with William's inability to accept her profession. Their turbulent relationship took a darker turn when William, after getting arrested several times for assault and once for breaking and entering, discovered Holly's client list by hacking into her email. One name on the list stood out: Erik Charles Maund, a married car dealer from Texas who was secretly involved with Holly.
Seeing an opportunity, William threatened Erik with exposing the affair unless he paid $25,000. Unbeknownst to Holly, this demand set a deadly chain of events into motion. Erik, desperate to keep the affair secret, enlisted the help of his friend Gilad Peled, a security consultant and former Israeli special forces soldier. Gilad's plan was ruthless: he hired two ex-Marines, Bryon Brockway and Adam Carey, for surveillance and eventual elimination of the perceived threat.
The execution was cold and calculated. After surveilling Holly and William, the hitmen ambushed them in Holly's apartment parking lot. William was shot multiple times and killed on the spot. Holly was kidnapped, taken to a remote construction site at 497 Old Hickory Blvd, and murdered. The killers then staged the scene to make it look like a car accident.
The initial illusion of a simple car crash was quickly dispelled by law enforcement's thorough investigation. The peculiar circumstances surrounding the crash site and the discovery of gunshot wounds on the victims pointed to foul play. As the police released surveillance images of the suspects, they struggled to identify them. It was only after an extensive 18-month investigation involving the FBI across multiple states that the culprits were apprehended.
On December 10, 2021, Erik Maund, Gilad Peled, Bryon Brockway, and Adam Carey were arrested. The following year, a federal grand jury indicted them on several charges, including murder for hire, conspiracy to kidnap resulting in death, and kidnapping resulting in death. Erik faced an additional murder-for-hire charge related to an alleged attempt to further cover up the crime. Gilad, in a twist, struck a plea deal with the FBI, agreeing to assist in the conviction of his co-conspirators in exchange for a lighter sentence.
The trial revealed the dark underbelly of human emotions and the lengths to which people would go to protect secrets. On November 20, 2023, the grand jury found all men guilty. While sentencing for the main perpetrators is pending, Gilad's cooperation with the authorities ensures he faces justice in June 2024. This tragic tale underscores the devastating impact of jealousy, greed, and the dark side of human nature, leaving a community to grapple with the shocking reality of a crime hidden beneath the guise of a tragic accident.
