As Data Science and UX teams collaborate more on projects around personalization, recommendations, and more - we need to work across pillars to help build the best products. We are excited to announce our May 2022 MLUX Case Study with the Expedia Group's Benas Skripka, Sr. Product Designer, and Victoria Lopez Morales, Lead Data Scientist, to discuss Machine-Centered Design and collaboration between Data Science and UX teams.

What is the Expedia Group?
Powered by more than 70+ terabytes of data and 20+ years of tech innovation, Expedia Group is one of the world’s largest travel platforms. With unrivaled knowledge of the industry and advanced tech innovation, we built a two sided marketplace that allows us to filter through millions of different possibilities, for travelers and partners worldwide.

We are travelers and technologists. We work across time zones, hemispheres, cultures and languages. We’re used to breaking things down and building them back up again, until they’re even better. We know travel can be hard, but we also know that it’s worth it, every time. And because we believe travel is a force for good, we take our roles seriously. We’re here to build great products, and facilitate connections between travelers and our partners that truly bring good into the world.

We build connections. We leverage our platform and technology capabilities across an extensive portfolio of businesses and brands to orchestrate the movement of people and the delivery of travel experiences on both a local and global basis. We help our travelers and our partners find the right pathways  through millions of possibilities to reach the best possible outcome.

About Victoria Lopez Morales
I am a data scientist, passionate about the application of Machine Learning to design data-driven solutions that can uncover hidden value based on the increasingly amount of data generated nowadays.

At the moment, I am working as a Lead Data Scientist at Expedia Group, where I am using my skills to enhance the online travel experience through the use of data, on how to use and enhance recommendation systems to surface relevant content to customers.

Prior to that, I was a member of the Data Science and Algorithms team at Sainsbury's, working on a diverse range of problems within the retail business, including optimising store space, predicting customer behaviour and enhancing depot layouts for cost-efficient store replenishment.

My first steps at dealing with data include a PhD in Computer Science about classification with highly skewed datasets, a problem in data mining predominant in real-world problems and a post-doc stage developing scalable methods in the context of Big Data and how emerging technologies should be used to deal with large amounts of data effectively.
