The earth observation industry has moved from one file format to the next. As dataset sizes expand and more information moves to the cloud, file formats become increasingly cumbersome for geospatial scientists. In fact, the issues have become so acute that the ESIP Summer Meeting hosted a panel titled, "The Saga Continues: Cloud-Optimized Data Formats", featuring a group of experts discussing the usability of the current landscape of “cloud-friendly” formats.
In this presentation, Stavros, the original creator of TileDB, discusses the problems with file formats and advocates for an alternative approach, urging the earth observation community to build storage engines and APIs that can neatly abstract their data format problems. He also provides a light introduction to TileDB and its approach to this problem, which is built on multi-dimensional arrays.
