AWS + Rails: How to Purchase a Domain through Route53 for a Rails App
In this video we will be starting a new series, AWS Rails. This series will be comprised of tutorials focused on specific ways to utilize AWS services in your Rails applications. Some videos may be more Amazon specific, while other are more Rails focused, but the goal will be to bridge the gap between amazon web services and Ruby on Rails where possible to demonstrate how to use various services to move your rails app off your local machine and into the cloud.
The first video of this series which is AWS focused: we will walk through How to Purchase a Domain through AWS Route 53 for a Rails App.
Amazon defines Route 53 as a highly available and scalable Domain Name System. You can use Route 53 to perform three main functions: domain registration, DNS routing, and health checks. DNS routing and health checks will be covered in later tutorials.
If you would like to follow along, the only prerequisite for this video will be an available domain you’d like to purchase. We will purchase the domain aws-rails.com, this will cost about $12 per year. In later videos I will attach this domain to an EC2 instance to serve a Rails application. This will serve as a playground for demonstrating various services.
