Apple Silicon M1 Macs Will NOT Have Native Adobe Apps Day One
Apple Silicon M1 Macs will NOT have native Adobe application support when they start arriving next week. When can you expect your favorite apps like Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Affects, Lightroom, InDesign, and all of the rest of the software available in the Adobe Creative Cloud to become natively supported on your new ARM based M1 Mac? In this video I analyze the potential downfalls of buying a new Apple Silicon M1 MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, or Mac Mini as someone who may rely on software in the Adobe suite to do your job.
As of right now, all we know is that Adobe Lightroom will be coming next month in December, and Photoshop will be following sometime after that in 2021. Many potential Apple Silicon Mac buyers may be concerned that if the device they purchase won't have native ARM Photoshop when they get their device, and will be unable to do their work. With no official release dates given, who knows when all of the Adobe Creative Cloud applications will be available on Apple Silicon Macs. You will have the option of running the x86 versions using Rosetta 2, however I expect that there will be potential performance losses as well as bugs and stability issues. We won't know for certain until benchmarks and real world tests are done next week after these devices arrive. I do fully believe that Apple Silicon Adobe apps will perform very well once they arrive, but I don't believe it will be very soon. With Adobe rushing to get these applications out of the door that may require and entire rewrite from scratch, there may be missing features or lots of bugs when they finally arrive.
MacOS Big Sur is also releasing this Thursday, November 12th, and will allow users to run iPad and iPhone apps directly on their M1 Macs, so users could potentially use Adobe iOS apps or other editing apps on their Mac while they wait. Hopefully Adobe is going full stream ahead and preparing Photoshop, InDesign, Lightroom, After Effects, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, and all of their apps to run natively on these new M1 Macs, since I believe that will offer far better performance than we see on current Mac devices.
