Cough variant asthma is when patients have only one symptom after having an asthmatic condition: a dry cough.
This type of asthma typically presents with no other associated symptoms, and standard treatment may not resolve the dry cough. The patient likely has cough variant asthma if the cough improves after asthmatic treatment.
Asthma typically presents 4 to 5 symptoms. However, the only symptom in cough variant asthma cases is a 'dry cough.' The reason is simple: if the airways are narrowed in asthma patients, there will be contraction in the air, triggering the cough. Other factors can also aggravate the cough, such as too much humidity or cold air, or living in a polluted environment.
To confirm the diagnosis, tests like FeNO (Fractional exhaled nitric oxide) and Spirometry tests can be performed to determine whether the cough is caused by asthma or another medical condition.
