During Japan's rapid economic growth in the 1950s and 60s, railways were crucial. To meet increasing transportation demands, the electrification of major lines progressed. Night trains served high demand, but sleeping cars were inefficient during the day. Thus, the 581 series EMUs were developed, convertible between seats and sleeping berths, debuting in 1967. They featured innovative designs and improved passenger comfort, marking a significant advancement in rail transport.
