Unlike popular belief, chameleons don’t change color to match their surroundings. Instead, their color-shifting ability is influenced by mood, temperature, and even communication.
Beneath their skin are layers of specialized cells. The key players? Cells called iridophores, which contain tiny crystals. By adjusting the spacing of these crystals, chameleons can reflect different wavelengths of light, altering their skin color.
When the chameleon is calm, the crystals are tightly packed, reflecting blue and green. But when it’s excited or feeling threatened, the crystals expand, reflecting warmer colors like yellow, red, or even orange.
This shift helps them communicate with other chameleons and regulate body temperature—science at its finest in nature’s design.
