I'll be showing you how to articulate words better on this week's episode of MasterTalk. Follow me on Instagram: @masteryourtalk
1. Practice pronouncing words in languages you don’t know. (0:45)
Your first reaction might be ?. What does Brenden mean by speaking in different languages? I can barely speak in the ones I already have, let alone present in them. Hear me out. Whenever you want to achieve a goal, you should always strive for the harder exercise to get there faster, a good example is if you want to run a 40 mile race, but you’re used to running 50 miles during your morning trainings, then 40 should be super easy for you. Articulation works in the same way. There’s still this great app that you can download on your phone called Duolingo, an amazing language tool that helps you pronounce words in new languages.
The more you practice this, the EASIER it will be to pronounce words in the languages you actually speak. In my case, I speak English, French and Tamil, but I can pronounce words in 8 different languages like Mandarin, Japanese and Korean. This increases your ability to articulate exponentially so that when you’re giving that English presentation, it’ll be much easier for you to overcome your fear, master your public speaking skills and pronounce words better than anyone you know. This is how to articulate words better.
2. Speak in front of your computer while typing. (2:34)
Whenever I write a YouTube video or a speech for a keynote, I present it alone to myself like I did with this video. This will be odd at first since your family members will wonder why you’re acting a bit differently, but it’s so helpful because you get used to hearing your own voice. Remember if you don’t like listening to yourself just a little bit, you can’t expect your audience to listen to you. That’s exactly why for YEARS when I started, I’d watch recordings of myself speaking, and practice while typing them out, so I can learn to speak in a way that everyone wanted to hear me and I know that if you’re just a bit persistent with this, you can achieve that outcome as well.
You can also compare and replicate the way that your favorite speakers sound, a lot of my early days was spent just watching other speakers and practicing like them until I developed my own unique sound and effect to get the job done. Even to this day, I still practice a lot alone in my basement or in front of my computer, so it’s a great reflex to just work on your articulation while you’re making the speech to see what you actually sound like with an audio recorder on your phone. This is how to articulate words better.
3. Get a language accountability partner. (3:47)
Accountability works everywhere, from getting healthier to growing a business to learning a new skill. This is a great asset to pronouncing words as well, find someone who wants to get better at public speaking and work together to build your communication and pronunciation. Whenever I give an important presentation in a certain language, I get friends of mine who speak that language very well to watch a recording of me presenting it and giving me feedback on how I pronounce/articulate certain words, so just do a quick phone presentation and send it to your friends for feedback and you do the same for them and you’ll all grow together. Never do anything great alone, and that’s why even for someone who speaks a lot like me, I still get my friends to help me with my presentations and speeches and give me new ideas to share what I have to offer with the world, so don’t neglect this part of it. This is how to articulate words better.
