1. Productivity starts with clarity (1:17).

If you want to master any skill, you should probably figure out why you want to in the first place. This is especially true with public speaking because progression isn’t as clear as everything else you’ve done in your life. If you start playing an instrument and you know how to play 1 song, you stay motivated and keep going, but that’s a bit more challenging with public speaking, because it’s hard to tell on your own how fast you’re progressing with it. This is how to master public speaking for beginners.

That’s why my first piece of advice is to ask yourself this simple question.

How would the world change if you were an exceptional communicator?

What most of us don’t realize is that public speaking isn’t just about presenting to a classroom or being on a camera, it’s about our lives. Every interaction you have is communication from the great conversations with your family to the tough ones with your friends, mastering public speaking will just make your life better, so getting clear on what it is you want out of life will help you stay motivated on your journey to mastering communication. This is how to master public speaking for beginners.

2. Focus all your attention on ONE presentation if you want results FAST (3:24).

Here’s why this tip is so important especially for beginners. Working on multiple presentations at the same time doesn’t work. Think about it. When you were in school and you had 8 different classes and you had to prepare 8 different presentations, you wouldn’t focus on making any of them amazing because you’re just trying to survive like the rest of us who pretty much see this skill as a chore. This is how to master public speaking for beginners.

But, the best speakers in the world, name any, whether it’s Tony Robbins or Gary Vaynerchuk or Brene Brown, they present the same thing repeatedly and that’s why their presentations are world class. If you want to get good fast, you NEED to figure out 1 topic that you’d be willing to present 100 times. You can ask yourself this question to figure this out.

If I had to present something over 100 times, what would I pick and why?

3. Apply the PUZZLE method + get feedback on it until it’s perfect. (5:26)

The final part of this is applying what I call the PUZZLE method. Public speaking in many ways is like a jigsaw puzzle, you know those 1000 piece puzzles you put together with your family, in the same way that when you tackle a puzzle, you start with the edges first, apply the same logic to your presentation. This is how to master public speaking for beginners.

Most people just throw a bunch of content in the middle and it doesn’t flow well, you, instead, need to present your introduction 50 times, not 3 or 5 times, do it 50 times, it won’t take you that long, probably an hour or so. Do the same thing with your conclusion, since last time I checked, a great movie with a terrible conclusion is a terrible movie. This is how to master public speaking for beginners.

Do the introduction and conclusion 50 times each, in only 2 hours of work, you’ve already made a lot of progress, and then the final step is figuring out what you want to say in the middle and recording a video of yourself presenting and sending it to a bunch of friends for feedback.
