Everyone wants to know if Honda will live up to their reputation for reliability with recent changes in their powertrain technology. While Honda's engines remain reliable (except the recent 1.5T), Honda and Acura CVT's may not their strongest point. In this video I teardown a CVT from a 2017 Honda HR-V to see whats inside, how it works and why they might fail!
The continuously variable transmission is simple mechanically, with a flexible metal push belt being driven by two variator pulleys to transfer torque with varying drive ratios. Unfortunately, CVT belt failure is the most common issue with Honda's modern transmissions, so much so that Honda extended the warranty on it.
This transmission suffered from a burnt forward reverse clutch, likely due to oil starvation. A blockage was found in the valve body oil pump supply. The fluid smelled burnt and was black, with lots of deposits floating around. While this transmission may have been neglected due to "lifetime transmission fluid", hastening fluid changes may have given it a chance. Transmission fluids should always be changed regardless of what the manufacturer recommends.
A transmission cooler can be added if heavy load is expected, like high payload or towing applications to help keep the fluid from deterioration. CVT's heavily rely on hydraulic pressure inside the variators and the forward reverse clutch to engage power transfer to the wheels, and thus fluid quality and level is important.
