KRATOS KILLS THE LAST SPARTAN AND GOES MAD IN GOD OF WAR II™
The Last Spartan is a young Spartan warrior fiercely loyal to Kratos during his time as the God of War. He first appears in God of War II and later in God of War: Ghost of Sparta.
Kratos's quest to find his brother Deimos leads him to the Temple of Ares in Sparta. There, the Last Spartan is ordering his comrades to topple the statue of Ares, a place intended for a new statue of Kratos, as the Ghost of Sparta had become the new God of War. After leaving the temple, Kratos encounters the young warrior again, who awaits him with the Weapons of Sparta.
Amidst Zeus's betrayal of Kratos, the Spartan army invading Rhodes is annihilated by Zeus with the power of the Blade of Olympus. The Last Spartan is the only warrior to survive the attack on Rhodes, despite being one of Zeus's closest allies during the assault. When Kratos returns from the Underworld, he encounters the Spartan and orders him to return immediately to Sparta and prepare for the next battle.
During Kratos's journey through the Palace of the Fates, after freeing the Phoenix, he enters a dark chamber with a large window at the far end. There, he finds a mysterious shadowy figure who claims to have come too far to fail at this point, and a battle ensues. Not recognizing each other, the two warriors unleash their full power in the fight. Although the Last Spartan lacks great offensive firepower, he uses his extraordinary defense to evade Kratos's powerful attacks.
During Kratos's time in the Palace of the Fates, after freeing the Phoenix, he enters a dark chamber with a large window at the far end. Having exhausted all his fighting resources, the Last Spartan is brutally impaled in the stomach by the Blades of Athena and then slammed against a window, shattering it and sending both warriors plummeting to an outdoor platform in the bright sunlight. At that moment, Kratos recognizes the warrior, whom he had ordered to return to Sparta to protect it. The Last Spartan informs him that Sparta no longer exists, as Zeus, after Kratos's presumed death, returned to the city and utterly destroyed it, leaving him as the last surviving Spartan.
Following the attack on Sparta, the Last Spartan had managed to reach the Island of Creation, seeking the Sisters of Fate who would help him change Sparta's destiny, but he hadn't counted on being killed by another Spartan. With his dying breath, the Last Spartan expresses his trust in Kratos, entrusting him with the mission of saving the Spartans. The Last Spartan finally dies before Kratos.
Enraged and unwilling to continue his mission, Kratos shouts to the heavens, demanding that Zeus descend and face him. At this moment, a colossal Kraken appears and attacks Kratos. The fallen Spartan's corpse proves useful in the battle, as Kratos places it on a pressure plate, which activates an air vent, allowing Kratos to fly with the Wings of Icarus and attack the Kraken's face. Ultimately, the Last Spartan's body is devoured by the grotesque creature.
Although he appears in several installments of the God of War saga, he has not been given a name, unlike some other, less significant characters.
After Kratos kills the Sisters of Fate and alters his destiny by returning to the moment Zeus killed him, he presumably also prevented the subsequent events, in which Zeus destroyed Sparta and all its inhabitants and warriors. Therefore, it is possible that the Last Spartan did not die because he never needed the help of the Sisters of Fate. However, after Poseidon's death, almost all of Greece was flooded, and the inhabitants of Sparta, including the Last Spartan, perished at that time.
His voice can be heard briefly in God of War III when Kratos is in the Pool of Blood. His line is: "The people cried out for you. They begged their god to save them. But you did not come."
Despite being mortal, he possesses enormous resilience; He survived Zeus's attack with the Blade of Olympus in Rhodes, withstood the King of the Gods' attack on Sparta, ventured into the Island of Creation seemingly without much trouble, and reached the Palace of the Fates in less time than Kratos. He also fought a fierce battle against the Ghost of Sparta, surviving some of its most merciless attacks, making him one of the most powerful mortals.
