Overview:

1. How do you become a CFI?

2. How long is my Flight Instructor Certificate valid for?

3. Renewing your Flight Instructor Certificate via:

4. Activity (5 applicants recommended for a checkride 80% first time pass rate.

5. Action by an FAA inspector who regularly observes you as a CFI or DPE.

6. Flight Instructor Refresher Clinic – Renew within 3 months and you keep your expiration month! – There is a gotcha. You must have the certificate issued by your expiration date, if all you have is the graduation certificate and not a new temporary you missed it!

7. Renewal – You take a checkride that is a smaller version of any flight instructor certificate you hold.

8. Pass another flight instructor rating you don’t have. Example CFI-A held, checkride for CFII or MEI.

9. What happens if I let the certificate expire?

10. Reinstatement – You take a checkride that is a smaller version of any flight instructor certificate you hold, or take a checkride for one you don’t. Reinstates all with any checkride pass.

11. Continuing education – The hallmark of a great flight instructor. Not doing it will make you less relevant.

12. Casual conversation about how to be and how to pick a great flight instructor – Things you wouldn’t think to ask:

13. Someone who needs the money!, who is a teacher who happens to be a pilot, doesn’t fly unless it benefits you, charges a good hourly rate so they will be dependable (This may actually save you money in the long run)

Senior career CFI hourly rate = 100/hr

New CFI hourly rate = 60/hr

Airplane hourly rate = 160/hr

Senior instructor will finish you in a shorter time = 55 hrs.

New CFI will finish you in 70 hrs.

Sr instructor billing flight=100*55 = 5500. Ground=35hrs*100=3500 Airplane 55*160=8800

Total=17,800

New CFI billing flight = 60*70=4200. Ground 45hrs*60=2700. Airplane 70*160=11,200

Total=18,100
