Cogwheel Rigidity and Lead Pipe Rigidity are both types of muscle stiffness often seen in neurological conditions, but they have distinct characteristics:

Cogwheel Rigidity
Definition: A type of rigidity where there is a ratchet-like, jerky resistance to passive movement of a limb.

Cause: Often associated with Parkinson's disease. The jerky resistance is due to superimposed tremor on the hypertonia.

Characteristics: The limb moves in small increments, similar to how gears move, hence the name "cogwheel".

Example: When moving a patient's arm, you feel a series of catches or jerks as you pass through the range of motion.

Lead Pipe Rigidity
Definition: A type of rigidity where there is a uniform, constant resistance to passive movement throughout the entire range of motion.

Cause: Also seen in Parkinson's disease, but can be present in other conditions like neuroleptic malignant syndrome.

Characteristics: The limb feels like a solid, unyielding pipe when moved, with no jerks or catches.

Example: When moving a patient's arm, it feels stiff and resists movement evenly from start to finish.
