British Cryptids: The Cumbrian Dregpike
"British fishermen have long been known to exaggerate the size of ‘the one that got away’. In fact, some stretches of water in these Isles have produced consistent reports of abnormally large fish, dating back centuries. But despite innumerable accounts over hundreds of years, there is at least one freshwater creature that has so far eluded scientific discovery. If reports are to be believed, it has claimed dozens of lives in England’s Lake District. Resembling a gigantic pike but possessing a horse’s mane and hind legs, it goes by many names: Viking settlers called it the Slœdgadda. But in Cumbrian dialect, it is known as the Dregpike."
Produced in 1974, the British Cryptids film series was presumably destined to be sold to a UK broadcaster - either the BBC or ITV - however they seem only to have been shown at schools and ended up languishing in public libraries.
The video files - originally recovered from the Internet Archive - were fragmentary, jumbled up and missing picture in places. We have pieced together the clips as best we can and leave it to the viewer to imagine what may be missing.
Amongst the titles we were able to acquire are: ’The Souter Sea Wolf’, ‘The Cumbrian Dregpike’, ‘Yorkshire Yeti’, ‘Stag Men’, 'The Woodwose of Cannock Chase', ‘The Hereford Twiggywitch’, 'The Ramflaggie of Argyll' and 'The Moon Man', but the catalogue numbers suggest there could be more.
