"In the year 1872, on a beach near South Shields in the north east of England, a small group of miners were wending their way home to Whitburn after an evening spent at the nearby Grotto Inn. They were buffeted by bitterly cold winds from the German Ocean - as the North Sea was known at the time - when one man stopped the others in their tracks. He drew their attention to a large bulky silhouette in the surf ahead of them, lit intermittently by the newly built Souter Point Lighthouse. They knew that no rock lay on the beach at this point but curious - and stiffened by an evening of ale - they approached the object…"

Produced in 1974, the British Cryptids films were presumably destined to be sold to a UK broadcaster - either BBC or ITV - but they seem to only have been shown at schools and ended up languishing in public libraries.

The video files - originally recovered from the Internet Archive - were fragmentary, jumbled up and missing picture in places. We have pieced together the clips as best we can and leave it to the viewer to imagine what may be missing.

Amongst the titles we were able to acquire are: ’The Souter Sea Wolf’, ‘The Cumbrian Dregpike’, ‘Yorkshire Yeti’, ‘Stag Men’, 'The Woodwose of Cannock Chase', ‘The Hereford Twiggywitch’, 'The Ramflaggie of Argyll' and 'The Moon Man', but the catalogue numbers suggest there could be more.
