Mediacorp is a Singaporean state-owned media conglomerate, and it operates a suite of TV channels, radio stations and multiple digital platforms in the country. It was Mediacorp itself that had pioneered Singapore’s broadcasting industry, having established radio broadcasts in 1936 (as the British Malaya Broadcasting Corporation), which was at the time when the small island city-state was once a part of the Straits Settlements.

Channel 5 is MediaCorp's flagship TV channel in English. Primarily airing general entertainment and news programs, it is among one of the most popular free-to-air TV channels in Singapore, along with the Chinese-language Channel 8 and the 24-hour news channel CNA.

Channel 5 started itself as Television Singapura when television is introduced in Singapore on 15 February 1963, and the station had initially delivered programming in the country's official languages of English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil; Chinese and Tamil programs were later spun off to Channel 8 in 1973, and Malay programming moved to Channel 12 in 1994.
