Spectacular marine bioluminescence!
The people of Port Lincoln, South Australia came out to play in the shallows of Boston Bay on a cold winter's evening to immerse themselves in a rare bioluminescent algal bloom commonly called 'sea sparkle'.
The marine single-cell phytoplankton Noctiluca scintillans reacts to disturbance by glowing a brilliant electric blue. Marine scientists believe this could be a response to ward off predators. No such problem for humans who splashed and ran through the water to create a stunning light show!
