The USS Abraham Lincoln, the flagship of US Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 3, is accompanied by the guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay and the guided-missile destroyers of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 21 Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 21 and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9.

As of August 22, 2024, the USS Abraham Lincoln CSG, together with the USS Theodore Roosevelt CSG, are in and within striking range of Afghanistan, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, the UAE, Uzbekistan and Yemen.

The US CSG, backed by the USS Georgia nuclear-powered attack submarine armed with up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles capable of hitting land targets, is in the Middle East region to serve as a strong US military deterrent to Iran and its various armed proxies in the Middle East region, who have threatened to attack Israel over recent events.
